How much notice should I give?
Two weeks is the common professional standard in the US when your contract or handbook doesn't say otherwise. Check your employment agreement first — some roles (and some countries) set longer periods, and your contract wins over any general rule.
Do I have to give a reason?
No. A resignation letter needs three things: that you are resigning, your last day, and a professional close. Reasons are optional, and if you give one, a single short sentence is plenty — the fuller conversation, if any, belongs in person.
Should I email it or hand it over in person?
Tell your manager in person or by call first when you can — a letter arriving cold is rarely received well. Then send the letter the same day so the dates exist in writing. The generator prints an email subject line if you need one.
What should I never put in a resignation letter?
